New Panteg RFC Under 9s 11 tries
New Panteg Under 9s travelled to Talywain on Sunday and came away with their best victory to date. The boys were impressive in all departments, and despite a gallant effort from the home side, New Panteg never looked like conceding a try from start to finish.
The scoring started early in the first half with tries from Craig Allen and Archie Tulloch, both from set piece moves that the boys had worked on in the warm up before the match. The visitors gained in confidence and some superb work at the ruck from Will Daley created opportunities for others to score, and at half time they had built a commanding lead of 5 - 0. Toby Mayo, Rhys Hayes and Craig Allen again produced some fine tackles to keep Talywain pegged back, with great support from Joey Robins and Owain Filer. The tries were scored by Archie Tulloch and Keiron Marsh with a hat-trick each, Craig Allen and Brandon Keenan with two each and one from Cai Roberts.
This was New Panteg's third away win in a row, and their confidence is growing with every match. The greatest improvement is the way the boys are reading the game, and working for each other. At the moment the quality of rugby is of a very high standard for this age group.
This week's man of the match award went to Brandon Keenan for two good tries and a remarkable improvement in his defensive duties. Next week's match is another away fixture at Machen.
New Panteg RFC Under 9s 9 tries
New Panteg's under 9s continued their recent good form by recording an emphatic victory away to St. Joseph's. The weather had earlier threatened to disrupt the fixture, but it eventually cleared enough for the boys to play.
New Panteg seemed to take advantage of the conditions well, and they played a strong forwards game from the start, while always looking for breaks down the sides. The performance was a repeat of last weeks win, with the home side struggling to compete in the break down and maul. The game was played mostly in St. Joseph's half during the first period, and the visitors had built a commanding lead by half time.
The second half saw an improvement from St. Joseph's, and they scored a break away try in the second half, but by that time New Panteg had stretched their lead. The final score of 9 - 1 was proof of the great improvement that New Panteg have managed this year, after so many postponed games caused by the bad weather. The break from playing has given the boys even more hunger to compete, and it showed on Sunday in their dominance and determination.
The try scorers this week were Craig Allen and Dewi Worwood with two each, and one a piece from Brandon Keenan, Harrison Lucas, Cai Roberts, Archie Tulloch and Griffin Spencer. Rhys Hayes, Toby Mayo and Joseph Wallbyoff supported well, but this week's man of the match award went to Will Daley for his strength in the tackle and driving through the opposition's defence from whistle to whistle.
Next week's match is at home to Abergavenny.
New Panteg RFC Under 9s 1 try
NHSOB RFC Under 9,s 4 tries
New Panteg Under 9s' recent winning streak came to an end on Sunday when they suffered their third defeat of the season against a superb side from NHSOB. Both sides entertained the crowd with some excellent quality rugby, and the game was played in good spirit by both sides.
After a minute silence in recognition of Remembrance Day, the game started evenly, with both sides defending well while constantly looking dangerous on the break. The visitors from Newport took a deserved lead after some good approach work, but it wasn't long before New Panteg replied with a fine break away try from Archie Tulloch. NHSOB regained the lead before half time with a drive through the middle, and their strength in forward play was starting to become a major advantage.
With the score at 2-1 New Panteg started the second half well, knowing that they were up against a very well drilled side. However, their efforts went unrewarded and NHSOB worked two more excellent push over tries to record a comprehensive victory. The scoreline did not reflect the effort and commitment of New Panteg's boys, and despite the scoreline, the boys took the defeat very well. This week's man of the match award went to Jack Probert, the team's youngest player, for his fearless tackling and breaking well with the ball in hand.
Next week's match is at home to Newbridge on Sunday 15th.
Cwmbran RFC Under 9s 2 tries
New Panteg RFC Under 9s 1 try
New Panteg's under 9s suffered a narrow away defeat at the hands of their local rivals Cwmbran on Sunday.
The match was played in glorious sunshine, and a good turnout of parents cheered the boys on throughout, making the atmosphere perfect for a good game.
The home side, Cwmbran, started the stronger, and were soon applying pressure in New Panteg's half, but the visitors were resolute in defence and also started to create chances as the half wore on. Cwmbran took a well deserved lead with the only score of the half, but it was eexcellent tackling, notably by Rhys Hayes and Toby Mayo that kept the scoreline within reach at the half time whistle. Brandon Keenan and Keiron Harber showed great improvement with some good runs and enthusiasm in the ruck.
The second half was just as close, but some persistent pressure in Cwmbran's half payed dividends when Will Daley picked up a loose ball from the ruck and scored in the corner. This move has worked well for New Panteg, with a similar try being scored in last week's match. The game was edging closer to a draw, when with the final move of the game, Cwmbran broke away down the left and scored the winning try.
As usual, the game was played in excellent spirit, and was a joy to watch. New Panteg's Craig Allen, Keiron Marsh and Dewi Worwood continue to tackle and drive with passion and strength, Cai Roberts showed some promising characteristic runs through Cwmbran's defence, and Jack Probert played his best game of the season so far with some courageous runs against much bigger opposition. This week's man of the match went to Will Daley for his excellent try, but again the whole team contributed well and never gave up against a good quality side.
New Panteg RFC under 9s came up against Bargoed RFC in the first meeting of the two teams at the Polo Grounds last Sunday.
The match was played as a friendly, as Bargoed were short on numbers, and New Panteg offered to lend some players to ensure everyone got a match. This good level of sportsmanship showed the boys' commitment to playing rugby. Keiron Harber, Joey Robins and Toby Mayo, on his debut, played the first half for Bargoed.
New Panteg dominated the opening exchanges, and their efforts were rewarded with a fine try from Craig Allen, who picked up loose ball from the ruck and sprinted to score in the corner. The home side tackled well, keeping Bargoed's side at bay, and were soon two up after a good score from Keiron Marsh, but the visitors always looked capable of a breakthrough.
The second half started with Craig Allen, Owain Filer and Dewi Worwood volunteering to play for the opposition. Bargoed's side responded well and scored four tries in the second half, with some good work from their runners.
New Panteg did not consider the final score to be a loss, as they had lent players to the opposition, as they have done on many occasions in the past. It highlighted the maturity and desire to play that is the main philosophy of the team, and the parents abnd supporters were again treated to a great spectacle, with strong but fair tackling from all the players, and some very skillful passing and running. The man of the match award went to Craig Allen for his try, strong tackling and good support work. Owain Filer was also given a man of th match award for the standard of his play in both his own side and for the opposition.
New Panteg's next game is away to local rivals Cwmbran this Sunday.

Talywain RFC Under 9s - 2 tries
New Panteg Under 9s - 7 tries
New Panteg maintained their unbeaten start to the season with an emphatic away victory over local rivals Talywain on Sunday morning..
After a closely fought first game last weekend against Croesyceiliog, which ended in a 1 - 1 draw, the New Panteg boys shook off their nerves and gave an impressive display against a very good Talywain side.
The conditions were perfect, and New Panteg started in style with a try in the first two minutes from Archie Tulloch. The large pitch suited the away side's fast style of rugby, and they were four one up by half time. Talywain were impressive and strong in the tackle, but New Panteg matched them in every department. The boys displayed a great improvement at the ruck compared to the previous week's performance, which came as a result of a good training session on Saturday.
The second half was more evenly contested, with Talywain using some replacements to add some variation to the play. New Panteg were pegged back for the first part of the second half, but managed to open up the defence and score three more tries before the final whistle. Talywain replied with a try of their own, but New Panteg thoroughly deserved the win, with good fast breaks and excellent support at the break down.
New Panteg's tries came from Keiron Marsh with one, and an impressive double hatrick (6 tries) from Archie Tulloch, who was runaway winner of the Man of the Match award for this week. Rhys Hayes and Craig Allen also came close to scoring, and along with the support play from Dewi Worwood, Will Daley, Cai Roberts, Joey Robins, Keiron Harber and Brandon Keenan the team showed that they aim to keep last season's momentum going. Next Sunday's match is at home to Bargoed RFC.

Croesyceiliog Under 9s 1 try New Panteg Under 9s 1 try.
New Panteg kicked off their first full contact match of the season away to local rivals Croesyceiliog. The contest was fought fairly from whistle to whistle, and both sets of spectators agreed at full time that they had seen a game of excellent quality. From the start, it was clear that it was going to be a close game. Both sides were fully committed, and the tackling was suprisingly tough. Neither side managed to break through to score until just before the end of the first half. A period of consistent pressure on the home side's line resulted in New Panteg taking a well deserved lead through Dewi Worwood, who picked up and drove over the line after a good tackle from the Croesy defence. The away side held on to their lead until half time with resolute work in defence, as well as threatening to score again.
New Panteg made four substitutions at half time, to enable the full squad to play, including some new faces playing their first game for the club. Croesyceiliog came out determined to even things up in the second half, and were eventually rewarded with a try in the corner following a good break. They almost stole the result with only two minutes to spare with a break down the right wing, but a solid tackle from Craig Allen saved the day. Both sides played through to the final whistle with fast and effective attacking breaks down the wings, but with equal determination and strength in defence. The final score accurately reflected the balance of play throughout the match, and both sides looked exhausted after playing so well. This week's man of the match award went to Dewi Worwood who played to a very high standard and scored New Panteg's only try, but the decision to choose one outstanding player was very difficult. The whole team played with skill, strength and determination.
Next week the New Panteg boys travel to Talywain for what should be another hard fought local derby.
