New Panteg RFC Under 10s 10
Chepstow RFC Under 10s 10

New Panteg under 10s welcomed Chepstow Under 10s for the first meeting between the two teams at Jarrows Fields on Sunday. The weather was dry and sunny with the ground quite hard underfoot, so a fast running match was anticipated.

The game was fiercely contested from the first whistle, with neither side giving an inch to the other. New Panteg got the first breakthrough, with a try from Rhys Hayes after good work in the ruck. This seemed to spur the visitors on, and they enjoyed a good spell of rugby up to half time, scoring twice to make the half time score 5 - 10.

New Panteg made some changes at half time, and the fresh legs brought some spark to the attack and defence, but Chepstow held their lines well and also had some good scoring chances themselves, with some strong taclking from Craig Allen and Dewi Worwood. However, the home side kept looking for the equalising try, and they went close twice with breaks from Cai Roberts and Joey Robins, who were only denied by last gasp tackles from the Chepstow defence. Griffin Spencer, Jack Probert and Joseph Wallbyoff worked well in the middle to create chances, and New Panteg were eventually rewarded for their efforts with a try from a 5 metre set piece by Rhys Hayes, who again used his strength to break through and score.

This week's man of the match award went to Owain Filer for keeping his discipline in a heated match, and good tackling.

New Panteg squad: C.Allen, W.Daley, O.Filer, R.Hayes, B.Keenan, H.Lucas, K.Marsh, T.Mayo, J.Probert, C.Roberts, J.Robins, G.Spencer, J.Wallbyoff, D.Worwood.

New Panteg RFC Under 10s 20 St Joseph's RFC Under 10s 0

New Panteg got back to winning ways last Sunday with a hard fought victory against St Joseph's from Newport. The weather was ideal for fast running rugby and the first half was no disappointment for the spectators. New Panteg opened the scoring early on courtesy of Joey Robins, who used his speed and change of feet to run in the first try. Robins has enjoyed a rich vein of form recently, and has now scored in four of the last five games. The home side increased the lead to 10-0 with a strong break through the middle by Toby Mayo, followed by a well deserved try from Cai Roberts, and despite coming up against some good work in the backs from St Joseph's, they held their defensive lines well to keep a clean sheet in the first half. Harrison Lucas and Dewi Worwood were impressive at the break down throughout. The second half was surprisingly dominated by the forwards, with neither side giving an inch. Both teams drove well in the maul and refused to give away posession, with Will Daley and Keiron Marsh working tirelessly in midfield to provide quality ball to the back line. Craig Allen and Jack Probert helped to keep the visitors at bay with some strong tackling, and Jo Wallbyoff supported well in attack. Brandon Keenan played the second half on his return from injury and got through unscathed. The second half looked like ending in a stalemate, depsite Isaac Hanks coming close to breaking through, but in the final minutes Griffin Spencer used his strength and speed to get over the line, only to lose the ball in the tackle. However, not to be denied, Spencer gathered again from a 5 metre penalty and scored a well deserved try in the corner, earning him the man of the match award for this week.

New Panteg RFC Under 10s 25 RTB Ebbw Vale RFC Under 10s 15

New Panteg's boys continued their recent good run of form with a hard fought win over a very good RTB Ebbw Vale side at Jarrolds Fields on Sunday morning. New Panteg were limited to 10 players with no substitutes available, but they started the stronger side with some good support and tackling. They were rewarded for their efforts when the opening try was scored by Isaac Hanks, and they home side grew in confidence. Further tries from birthday boy and Captain for the day Dewi Worwood, and a fine effort from Joey Robins, gave them a 15 - 0 lead, but as the half came to a close, the visitors scored a good breakaway try down the wing to keep themselves in the hunt.

With the score at 15 - 5, the second half started the same as the first, with New Panteg dominating in midfield, and the superb Keiron Marsh scored a well deserved try through the defence. RTB then replied with a well worked try of their own, which was down to some excellent phases and a patient build up, but New Panteg kept their spirit and re-established the margin with a driving run from the hard working Craig Allen. However, much to their credit, the visitors never gave up hope of a comeback, and after sustained pressure they scored the final try of the game to bring the score to 25 - 15.

In terms of teamwork, this was the best game to date for the New Panteg team. Support was always there, tackling was firm but fair, and they were always looking to get the ball wide to create chances. Brandon Keenan took a knock to the ankle in the first half, and had to come off, but up to that point he was strong in the tackle and fast on the break. Will Daley was in the thick of play at every breakdown, and Owain Filer's forward work was relentless. Cai Roberts, Jo Wallbyoff and Isaac Hanks worked tirelessly in the backs, defending and attacking equally well. The man of the match award was shared this week between Will Daley and Keiron Marsh, both players putting themselves on the line from whistle to whistle.
