21/02/2010 – NEW PANTEG UNDER 14s 21-5 ST JOSEPHS CASNEWYDD

The overdue win New Panteg was looking for finally came today with a huge performance over a very good St Josephs side.

From the kick off, New Panteg meant business. Huge hits from the outstanding Adam Tetley and Ieuan Needs laid the platform for the rest of the match. The home side then went in attack mode, resulting in flanker Ieuan Harris scoring a well worked penalty move.

St Josephs were on the attack and the referee missed a forward pass in otherwise a fantastic performance which led to the away team’s only try. Half time 7-5 to New Panteg.

The second half started brightly, with notable mentioning to Dominic Gibbons and Jack Swinn for their gutsy performances in ruck and tackle, and the outstanding back row players of Harris, Ieuan Lever, Tom McSweeney and substitute Ben Whitcombe securing possession and supporting every time. The game’s second try came when from a set piece move set free Jack Carmock, whose blistering pace beat 5 defenders to score under the posts.

Discipline was the only downfall of the performance, with a yellow card given to Evan Taylor for an illegal tackle and silly penalties given away, but New Panteg was still in attack mode and the superb substitute prop Jon Coleman busted through the gain line to set up Needs to secure the win.

The performances of recent weeks suggested that New Panteg was due a win, and along with better efforts in training, the win came today and was thoroughly deserved. New Panteg look to make it 2 wins on the bounce when Oakdale are the visitors next Sunday.

11th October 2009 – Caerleon 48 New Panteg 24

A second half collapse from New Panteg ensured 2 time district cup winners Caerleon recorded an emphatic victory in this under 14s fixture.

The visitors were first to score, with some superb rucking by the pack and an excellent tackle from Ieuan Lever led to a spilled ball and captain Cameron Evans pouncing to score under the posts for a converted try. This seemed to kick Caerleon into gear, as they scored 2 quick replies to take the lead. This seemed to set to the tone for the first half as New Panteg then scored again, with some superb driving runs from Ben Witcombe and Tom McSweeney laid the platform for centre Adam Tetley scoring his first try for the club, a try which he thoroughly deserves for his all action performances this season. Caerleon scored another well worked try, with their outside half always looking dangerous. This took the scores to 17-12 at half time, with a good level of expectation from the visitors to sneak a shock victory.

However, this was not to be, as the hosts shown why they have been crowned champions for the last 2 years with an attacking master class. However, some very poor tackling and a lack of aggression in contact from New Panteg helped Caerleon’s second half performance. Nether less, New Panteg did score 2 tries of their own. The first coming from Cameron Evans picked up from the base of the scrum to score his second try of the match in the corner. The second, and final try of the game, came from some ferocious rucking, headed by Jack Swinn and Dominic Gibbons led to Ieuan Harris using skill and pace to score in the corner.

A lot of work needs to be done in training, with tackling, aggression and attitude being the key areas to work on. Next week see’s New Panteg under 14s travel to St Joseph’s RFC in search for their first win in over a month.

4th October 2009 – New Panteg 19 Monmouth 24

Although the performance was of a much satisfactory level, New Panteg under 14s let themselves down with silly discipline which cost them the game against a spirited Monmouth outfit. Things started badly for the hosts, as Monmouth scored 2 tries in quick succession due to a lack of concentration. However, this seemed to wake up New Panteg, as the powerful pack took over and tries from second row Dominic Gibbons and prop Jon Coleman meant that New Panteg took the scores to 12-12 at half time.

Monmouth looked dangerous throughout the match, only for some superb defence from Alyn Rees and Adam Tetley keeping the visitors at bay. But the discipline, which cost the home team dear last week, crept in again, as they failed to retreat 10 metres from a penalty and resulting in an unconverted try. But New Panteg pushed on and took the lead when Cameron Evans picked up from the base of the scrum and used strength, speed and agility to score, converted by Alex Gwatkin. But, Monmouth didn’t stop there, as again, New Panteg gifted the visitors a try by failing to retreat back 10 metres from a penalty and ultimately lost the game 19-24.

Everyone involved with New Panteg under 14s wishes last season’s player of the year, Ieuan “Rhino” Needs a speedy recovery from his heel injury.

27th Sept 2009 – New Panteg 10 Cwmbran 17

New Panteg under 14s hosted Cwmbran in an entertaining local derby in which the visitors gained revenge from the taste of defeat in the last fixture between these sides. Winger and man-of-the-match Ben Evans scored two superb tries and made some outstanding tackles during the course of the game. The forwards were once again superb in the set piece, winning 6 scrums against the head and consistently winning lineout ball. However, silly mistakes, rushed attacks of play, lack of discipline and at times a lack of aggression was New Panteg’s downfall and the reasons for the defeat.

Nothing taken away from Cwmbran, but it was a case of “they didn’t win the game but we lost the game” for the home side. Good news came after the game, where Pontypool Schools scouts invited back row players Ieuan Lever, Ben Whitcombe and Cameron Evans to represent Pontypool Schools a year earlier than they would normally. Well done to all three players and we hope they do themselves and New Panteg proud. Next game for New Panteg under 14s is a home game vs. Monmouth.

20th September 2009 – Bargoed 17 New Panteg 21

New Panteg under 14s travelled to Bargoed with the underdog tag, but upset the odds to score a morale boosting victory.

The visitors started off brightly, with the ruck area vastly improved from last week, with Ieuan Harris and Jack Swinn standing out in both clearing out and turning over ball. However, it was Bargoed who scored the 1st try of the game, which was a well worked team try from the hosts. However, New Panteg hit back, with Alex Gwatkin’s boot down the opponents half, which led to flanker Ieuan Lever pouncing to touch down and level the scores at 7-7. Bargoed immediately replied  with a very well drilled driving maul which led to an unconverted try in the corner.

New Panteg, who lost 45-0 to the same opponents 2 seasons ago, impressed supporters and coaches on the side. With excellent quick ruck ball set from the forwards that sucked in the defence and breath taking attacking play found Cameron Evans on the overlap to touch down. Half time score Bargoed 12 New Panteg 14.

The second half saw exactly the same as the first half, with excellent pressure from all players, from the scrum, which had a total of 5 wins against the head, to the defence in the backline, led to mistakes from Bargoed and Cameron raced into space on the outside to score another converted try. Bargoed replied with another unconverted try, due to a small lapse of concentration and although the referee had to blow a few minutes early due to an unfortunate brawl but that didn’t take the gloss of the victory and most importantly banished the memories of last week’s controversial match.

Next week, New Panteg under 14s are home to local rivals Cwmbran.

6th September 2009

New Panteg 0 Glamorgan Wanderers 22

Despite being on the losing side, New Panteg under 14s should be proud of the performance against a very well drilled Glamorgan side. Things didn’t start well, as in the first 10 minutes the visitors were already 2 tries up. However, New Panteg didn’t let their heads drop and if only they had more cutting edge they would have scored a try of their own. A few positives for the hosts were the scrummaging, with Ieuan Needs and Jordan Davies producing a superb display in that area. Also, the line out was excellent, with Jack Swinn standing out there. The frustrating side of the game, however, was the support at the ruck, where the New Panteg forwards was slow getting to the breakdown, an area in which coaches Curt Hamer and Gavin Evens look to address in training this week ahead of the local derby next Sunday against Talywain.

1st September 2009 –

Croesyceiliog 15 New Panteg 41

New Panteg under 14s kicked off the 2009/2010 season with a resounding victory over a much improved Croesyceiliog side.

In wet and gloomy conditions, it was even until the 5th minute, when Cameron Evans carried on where he left off from last year by scoring a try after some good vision from Alex Gwatkin and breaking a few tackles. It was quite a tight affair, as the hosts shown their resilience in the contact area and was an obvious improvement in their side, but New Panteg kept their heads together and was sparked to life with brilliant individual skill from returning full-back Gavin Rees to score. From the resulting restart, wing speedster Jack Carmock caught the ball to sprint 70 metres to score under the posts, with the resulting kick converted by Alex Gwatkin. Croesy was caught cold by the visitors, who ended the half with another converted try from Cameron after some excellent running rugby, particularly from Nathaniel Bury and Adam Tetley.

The second half started as the first ended, with excellent pressure in defence from Jon Coleman and Ben Whitcombe resulted in turnover and a sweeping counter attack rugby and Rhys Roberts scoring a converted try. Cameron completed his hat-trick soon after, with quick ruck ball and fast hands providing Cam with the try. In credit, Croesyceiliog didn’t give up, and scored two quick tries in succession. First from their number 8 picking up from the base of the scrum 5 metres out and another from poor defence from the visitors allowing the Croesy captain race 60 metres to score. However, New Panteg didn’t stop there, as some fantastic attacking rugby once again ending up with debutant Ben Whitcombe crashing over, and although Croesy scored a consolation try at the end, coaches Curt Hamer and Gavin Evens were very happy with the performance, even if there was over confidence in the second half.

Special mentions must go to Jon Coleman, Dom Gibbons and Ieuan Needs for their aggressive defence, Adam Tetley and Ben Whitcombe for their sound performance on their debuts and also for the returning Gavin Rees, who was awarded man of the match for his continuous threat in attack.

19TH APRIL 2009 –

NEW PANTEG UNDER 13's 44 – 14 CROESYCEILIOG

New Panteg head off to their annual end of season tour to Weymouth on the back of an excellent attacking performance against local rivals Croesyceiliog.

The hosts raced into the opponents 22, with Ieuan Harris at the centre of the attack and finally lead to Evan Taylor to score in the corner. Croesy hit back, with some poor tackling from New Panteg leading to a converted try of their own. However, their lead was short lived, as Harris and Taylor score in quick succession to take the score to 15-7. However, players were continuing to miss tackles which resulted in the visitors to score another try to come within a point of levelling. Waves of attacking play from Croesy came for the rest of the first half, only thanks to Ieuan Needs and Jon Coleman for their excellent defence work to keep the score 15-14 at half time.

The second half was a different story, as New Panteg played some breathtaking attacking rugby. Harris added his second try from excellent interchanging of passing from the whole team. The next 2 tries came in quick succession from kick-offs, the 1st coming straight to Michael Stool, who bursted through gaps to score under the posts and Cameron Evans copied that a moment later, both tries converted by Rhys Roberts. The next try came from excellent vision from Rhys Roberts, who kicked to space and Ieuan Harris chased excellently to pick up the ball to complete his hat-trick, a well deserved present for his outstanding performances of late. Finally, captain fantastic Ieuan Needs scored, from excellent forward drive via Macauley Griffiths and Ieuan Lever led to Needs capping off an excellent days work for New Panteg under 13s. Final score New Panteg 44 – 14 Croesyceiliog.

22/02/09

Rhymney/Gwent 0 – 41 New Panteg under 13s

New Panteg under 13s stretched their unbeaten run to 4 games with a 7 try demolition of a brave Rhymney/Gwent side, even without some key players due to injury and unavailability.

The hosts started brightly but against the run of play, full-back Alex Gwatkin hit the line and fed Jack Carmock, with the winger using speed and strength to score in the corner. The next try came 2 minutes later, as powerful running from Andrew Carter and quick ruck ball led to Gwatkin to score. Two more tries followed, with the first from second row Kieran White, and Michael Stool added another try to the one he scored last week. Half time Rhymney/Gwent 0 – 20 New Panteg.

The second half saw waves of attacking play from the visitors. The outstanding Ieuan Lever was a big feature in the entire second half’s three tries. First, setting up Even Taylor, who dodged numerous tackles to score under the posts, converted by Gwatkin. The second breaking a tackle and then passing to Ieuan Needs, who bashed a few tackles to score another converted try. And the last by forcing the opponents into an error, leading to Rhys Roberts scoring and converting his try. A man-of-the-match award fully deserved for flanker Lever.

An excellent performance, and with up to 4 players returning to action for New Panteg next week, including last seasons award winners Macauley Griffiths and Ieuan Harris, and Dragons debutant Cameron Evans, the tail-end of the season looks really promising.

15/02/09 - CWMBRAN 22 – 27 NEW PANTEG

New Panteg under 13s claimed their first ever win over their more glamorous opponents with an excellent away win, which could have been bigger than the score line suggested.

New Panteg were in attack mode from the off, but some dubious refereeing led to Cwmbran scoring the first try of the game. However, New Panteg hit back with Nathaniel Bury, who noticed the gap and scored an excellent individual try. This was quickly followed with a score from the outstanding Michael Stool, who used his pace and strength from a set piece move to score a converted try under the posts. Half time score Cwmbran 5 – 12 New Panteg.

The second half started as the first half ended. Waves of phenomenal attacking play, with continuity of the ball  from the ruck area, resulting in an exquisite break from Iestyn Howells who fed Cameron Evans to score in the right corner.

New Panteg fell asleep when another decision went against them, which led to Cwmbran punishing them with a score. The hosts however hit back  with ferocious running from Macauley Griffiths and Rhydian Jones. This resulted in Ieuan Needs try to extend their lead.

However, the fun didn’t stop there, as the hosts scored two tries against the run of play to level scores at 22 all. And although Cwmbran pressed to score once again, heroic tackling from Ieuan Harris and Kieran White prevented the visitors conceding a further try.

Finally, some excellent team play once again saw Cameron spot the gap to score the winning try and win the local derby. Considering exactly a year ago in the corrosponding fixture New Panteg lost 26 – 0 to Cwmbran, it shows that the work and commitment shown by players and coaches in the last 12 months has paid off.

We also wish full-back Gavin Rees a speedy recovery from knee ligament damage and we hope to see him back in a New Panteg jersey soon.

1st February 2009

 New Panteg under 13's 15 – Monmouth under 13's 10

New Panteg continued their good form in 2009 with a victory over a determined Monmouth outfit.

The hosts made a sloppy start to the game,  several missed tackles and poor decision making in attack resulted in the home side being put under pressure and Monmouth scoring the opening try.

This seemed to kick New Panteg into gear. As continuous forward driving, led by new District squad member Cameron Evans, resulted in captain Alex Gwatkin  bursting through a gap to score his first try for the team. Half time New Panteg 5 – 5 Monmouth.

The second half saw a more committed New Panteg performance in their defence and in the ruck area. Mountains of pressure saw Macauley Griffiths  bundle across the line to take the lead.

Moments later, New Panteg were back on the attack. Fronted up by the excellent Dominic Gibbons, the forwards took authority in the game, which ended up with Evan Taylor  scoring a good team try in the corner.

Monmouth scored a late and deserved consolation try, but this could have been avoided if New Panteg’s discipline was better throughout the game.

14th December 2008 - New Panteg 36 – 0 Croesyceiliog

New Panteg got back to winning ways with an outstanding display against local rivals Croesyceiliog.

The visitors started off in attack mode, however heroic tackling from Jon Coleman and Ieuan Harris ensured Croesy came away with nothing for their efforts. The first try came against the run of play, resulting from winning scrum against the head, scrum half Nathaniel Bury burst through the gap to score in the corner. The second try soon followed, with ferocious rucking from Dominic Gibbon and Ieuan Lever led to Cameron Evans to finish off a well worked team try. Half time 10-0 New Panteg.

New Panteg ran riot in the second half, scoring four more tries. A mistake from the visitors 5 metres from their line led to excellent hands from Andy Carter and Joel Hamer for Cameron to score his second, converted by Rhys Roberts. The next try came from debutant scrum half Evan Taylor from taking a tap penalty to find the space to score under the posts, converted by Roberts. The spectators didn’t have to wait long for the next try, when Jack Carmock hit the angle sweetly and sprinted 80 metres to score a first class individual try. The final try came from excellent pressure on the Croesy line, leading to a well deserved try for the faultless stand in fly half, Rhys Roberts. Final score 36-0 to New Panteg.

The coaches were proud of the performance, even more so with the first clean sheet of the season. Well done boys!

Sunday 16th November 2008.

ABERTILLERY 7-12 NEW PANTEG UNDER 13s

New Panteg under 13s won their first away game of the season with a 'snatch and grab' win over a well drilled Abertillery outfit.

The hosts started off with abundance of pressure in New Panteg’s 22m area; however an excellent turnover from Captain Alex Gwatkin led to Cameron Evans to break free to score under the posts, converted by Gwatkin.

It was all Abertillery for the rest of the half, but they could only manage a well deserved converted try, making the half time score 7-7.

The hosts started the second half as they ended the first, however, a different New Panteg side was on the field this time, with the heroic tackling of Macauley Griffiths and debutant Jack Swinn prevented Abertillery from scoring.

The tide turned in the last 5 minutes, as the visitors played their own brand of rugby. Excellent team play, highlighted by the skill and footwork of Alyn Rees, led to substitute Ieuan Lever to score in the corner to secure an unlikely but well grinded out win for New Panteg.

02nd November 2008.

NEW PANTEG 29 – 21 BUILTH WELLS

New Panteg warmed up for their cup match next week with a lucky win over a stubborn Builth Wells outfit.

New Panteg started on the attack, with excellent vision from fly-half Alex Gwatkin, who freed Cameron Evans, filling in at outside centre because of unavailability of players, to score under the posts, which Gwatkin converted. Then an excellent turnover from Jordan Davies resulted in Cameron being released again to score another converted try. The visitors tried to get back into the game, but solid defence from Ieuan Harris, Kieran White and Michael Stool prevented them from scoring in the first half. Two more tries was scored by Cameron in the 1st half to give a healthy half time score of 24-0. The only thing that marred the 1st half performance was the sin-binning of hooker Rhydian Jones for dangerous play in the maul (but we let him off this time!).

The second half was a different story, with the hosts being sloppy in the ruck and missing numerous tackles, which resulted in Builth Wells scoring 21 unanswered points and in with a good shout for a remarkable comeback. However, quick thinking from Jon Coleman from a tap penalty put the resurging Builth Wells on the back foot, ending with Cameron scoring his 5th try of the game to end any nerves from the players and on the sidelines.

Next week, New Panteg under 13s hosts Cefn Fforest in the Dragons Cup. All supporters are welcome to come and support the boys, who hope to reach the quarter finals.

Sunday 5th October.

NEW PANTEG 38-7 CROESYCEILIOG

New Panteg got back to winning ways with a comfortable victory over local rivals Croesyceiliog.

New Panteg pressured the oppoents from the kick-off, but it took 10 minutes for good carrying from Ieuan Needs to set up Macauley Griffiths for the first try, which was converted by Alex Gwatkin. Minutes later, it was a case of deja vu, as Needs set up Macca again for his second try, converted again by Gwatkin. New Panteg got a little complacent and allowed Croesy to score their only converted try underneath the posts. However, the home team hit back when outstanding passing from centres Joel Hamer and Adam Howells allowed flanker Ieuan Lever to link up and sprint 40 metres to score another converted try. Half time score New Panteg 21 Croesy 7.

The second half started off as the first half ended, with good free flowing play from the hosts led to substitute Cameron Evans, dubbed 'The Beast', to score a well executed try. New Panteg could have scored many tres in the second half, only for over confidence to kick in and had to rely on an excellent try saving tackle from Michael Stool to prevent the visitors from scoring another try. However, a late flurry of tries from newly converted hooker Jon Coleman and a second from Cameron gave the scoreline a better reflection of the performance.

We also like to say a big well done to Ieuan Harris and Alex Gwatkin, who have been named Captain and Vice Captain for the rest of the season.

Sunday 21st September

New Panteg 34 - 7 Risca
New Panteg Under 13s continued their unbeaten start to the season beating Risca convincingly.

Straight from the kick off and after a phase of play, Cameron Evans broke free to score underneath the posts with Gareth Godwin converting the extra two points. It took another 10 minutes for New Panteg to score again, camped in the opponents half, excellent free flowing play from the backs and excellent rucking from the pack led to Macauley Griffiths crashing over for the games second try, again converted by Godwin. New Panteg’s next visit to the opponents 22 led to Ieuan Needs pick up from the base of the ruck to score an excellent try in the corner. Risca did score a well worked consolation try but that did not stop Cameron scoring another two tries, which capped off an excellent 1st half to make the half time score 29-5.

The second half promised to be just as exciting to watch than the 1st half, but New Panteg only managed to score one more try. Excellent passing from Nathaniel Bury and Ben Evans led to Cameron to break away once again and score a well executed try. Although New Panteg should have scored more, Risca improved their defence and stopped the scoreline being much bigger.

NEW PANTEG U 13s 21 YSTRAD MYNACH U 13s 7

New Panteg Under 13s made a dream start to the new campaign with a convincing performance against Ystrad Mynach.

The home side were on the backfoot at the start, only heroic tackling by Ben Evans and Gavin Rees prevented the visitors from scoring.

New Panteg then had a period of pressure on their opponents 22, but couldn't break the deadlock until Cameron Evans bundled over for the first try from a tap penalty. Alex Gwatkin slotted over the conversion to make it 7-0 to New Panteg at half-time.

The second half didn't start the best as a rare loss of concentration led to a Ystrad Mynach converted try.

However, New Panteg hit back, when Cameron swapped with Nathaniel Bury in the scrum to pick up the ball and broke through the opponents defence to score his second try, which again was converted by Gwatkin.

Cameron then completed his hat-trick when excellent play from the backs, marshalled by Gwatkin and Gareth Godwin led to Cameron to use his pace in his favour to score under the posts for another converted try to round off an excellent individual and team performance.

2007/2008 Season.

NEW PANTEG RFC UNDER 12s PRESENTATION NIGHT 30th MAY 2008

New Panteg Under 12's  35  Chew Valley Under 12's 19

New Panteg Under 12s capped off an excellent tour with a convincing victory over their English rivals. New Panteg found it difficult at first to adjust to the English rules of the game but once they settled down, an excellent push in the scrum resulted in Jonathan Coleman to use the advantage of picking up from the scrum to crash over for the first try of the match, which was well converted by outside half Gareth Godwin.

Chew Valley then changed to attack mode and using the downhill slope as an advantage, scored a well-worked team try, which was unconverted. A rare period of poor tackling from New Panteg resulted in the Chew Valley winger breaking away from his own half to score a try, which was converted well by their outside half. After one third of the game, the score was 12-7 to the hosts.

New Panteg were on the back foot once again in the 2nd part of the game, only for excellent defence from Dominic Gibbons, Alyn Rees and Ieuan Harris to stop the English opposition to score in this third. Some excellent play then resulted from New Panteg as they spread the ball for winger Gavin Rees to touch down to take a slender lead of 14-12 going into the final third.

New Panteg knew that due to the territory and possession they have had, that the floodgates will open soon. And that started off with some fantastic play by Joel Hamer and Rhys Roberts, resulting in the forwards driving excellently and Cameron Evans bundling over for a well-worked team try. Some excellent carrying from Macauley Griffiths and Bradley Williams led to New Panteg being in the opposition 22 once again, with the try coming from Jordan Davies, converted once again by Godwin. The final try for New Panteg was made by some excellent work in the back line and a pick up from Man-of-the-Match Ieuan Needs who scored in the corner, with Godwin keeping a 100% kicking record for the first game this season. He fully deserved his try and man-of-the-match award for his excellent ruck work and ball carrying. Chew Valley did score a consolation try but was not enough to take away the deserved victory from New Panteg.

Special mention must go to the forwards, who for the first time had to push in the scrum, and pushed the opposition off in virtually every scrum, so was a great credit to themselves and for the rest of the team.

Coaches Gavin Evens (Sheep), Curt Hamer and Ian Davies were very proud with how the game went and the excellent behaviour of the boys during the tour, well done boys!
